Nightclubs and public houses are among a growing number of small businesses that are installing small weatherproof surveillance cameras on their premises to deter vandalism and help police in determining the aggressor when fights break out.

BBC reporter Ashley Blake found that out the hard way in 2009, when a pub surveillance camera caught him assaulting a 17 year old at a birthday party. Blake was convicted of unlawful wounding and attempting to pervert the cause of justice (by lying to police) after footage from the surveillance camera was played in court.

Security cameras

When we think of security cameras, normally one thing comes to mind. The large square box cameras that stare down on the public from posts at traffic intersections, a “Big Brother” presence viewed by unknown officials at an unknown place.But these days the term refers to much more than that. For many years there has been a thriving market for much smaller, more flexible cameras available to the public. Different shapes and sizes have different abilities and uses, from the tiniest of pinhole cameras to the outdoor all-weather property cameras.

Special use cameras

When we think of surveillance cameras, we always think of them watching us. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact surveillance cameras are used in a variety of different – sometimes unexpected – locations for important tasks that take place where it is difficult for humans to easily go. Such cameras could be termed special use surveillance cameras, and are more prevalent than we might at first realize.
